Abstract
Objectives
The main objectives of this study were to explore the role of middle management in communication during digital transformation. Additionally, the nature and the processes of communication during digital transformation were explored.
Summary
Digital transformation is a growing interest amongst scholars. However, there seems to be a disconnect between the literature and what's done in practice. Furthermore, not much has been studied about the role of the middle manager during digital transformation.
Conclusions
Both the literature review and the empirical findings of this study highlight a people-centric approach to communication during digital transformation. This is because of the organization wide effect digital transformation has on organizations. Communication should be transparent and inclusive.
Middle managers have various tasks in communication during digital transformation. They can voice the concerns of their subordinates or affect the acceptance of change by having good communication skills. Further research could quantify the impact of communication and longitudinal studies could be done to further evaluate the role of middle managers in communication during digital transformation.
