Abstract
Tässä diplomityössä tarkastelen arkkitehtuurin materiaalisuutta ja henkeä omiin havaintoihini ja lähdekirjallisuuteen pohjautuvien esseiden kautta. Pyrin ymmärtämään, mitä materiaalisuus, henki ja sielu voivat tarkoittaa arkkitehtuurin kontekstissa, ja kuinka ne ovat yhteydessä toisiinsa sekä ihmisten kokemukseen arkkitehtuurista.
Katson arkkitehtuuria ihmisen tuottamana, kokemana ja kuluttamana kulttuurin tuotteena, materiaalisena hyödykkeenä sekä symbolisena merkkijärjestelmänä, johon liitetään erilaisia arvoja. Toisaalta tarkastelen arkkitehtuuria myös ihmisestä erillisenä materiaalisena, ja sielullisenakin, oliona.
Olen käyttänyt työni kehyksenä erityisesti fenomenologisen arkkitehtuurin teorian sekä uusmaterialististen teorioiden kirjallisuutta. Fenomenologinen arkkitehtuurin teoria tarkastelee arkkitehtuurin ilmenemistä ihmisen kokemusmaailmassa. Uusmaterialistiset teoriat taas liittyvät posthumanistisiin diskursseihin, ja niissä keskitytään materiaaliseen maailmaan sekä sen yhteyksiin ja toimijuuksiin kyseenalaistaen ihmiskeskeisyyttä ja muita hierarkioita. Teoriat tarkastelevat arkkitehtuuria ja muuta materiaalista maailmaa osittain erilaisista, osittain samankaltaisista ja toisiaan täydentävistä näkökulmista. Tämän ansiosta niiden kautta on hedelmällistä pohtia arkkitehtuurin ristiriitaisiakin materiaalisia ja immateriaalisia ominaisuuksia sekä arkkitehtuurin ja ihmisyyden välistä suhdetta.
In this master's thesis, I examine the materiality and spirit of architecture through essays based on my own observations and source literature. I seek to understand what materiality, spirit and soul can mean in the context of architecture, and how they are connected to each other and to humans' experience of architecture.
I view architecture as a cultural product produced, experienced and consumed by humans, as a material commodity and as a symbolic sign system to which various values are attached. On the other hand, I view architecture as a material, and soulful, entity that is separate from humans.
I have used phenomenological architectural theory and new materialist theories as a framework for my work. Phenomenological architectural theory is centred around the human experience of architecture. New materialist theories, on the other hand, are related to posthumanist discourses, and they focus on the material world and its connections and agencies, questioning anthropocentrism and other hierarchies. These theories examine architecture and the material world in general from partly different, partly similar and complementary perspectives. This makes them fruitful for considering the contradictory material and immaterial properties of architecture and the relationship between architecture and humanity.
