Abstract
This thesis examines the financial management and governance of European football clubs. It focuses on accounting practices, Financial Fair Play regulations, different governance models and their impacts on financial performance. As football clubs are both business and cultural institutions, they face unique challenges, such as volatile revenue streams and high transfer costs, made worse by governance issues. While the football industry has seen significant growth in popularity and revenues over the years, many clubs continue to struggle financially due to poor governance and prioritization of onfield success over financial success.
The study addresses accounting practices specific to football clubs, highlighting the issues such as the treatment of player assets and the inconsistencies in financial reporting across clubs. The research questions focus on identifying specific accounting practices in football, understanding the influence of FFP on these practices, and analyzing how governance structures affect financial performance. This study aims to provide insight into the complexity of financial management, governance and regulatory frameworks in European football.
